How to use your writing to build your income and audience in 2024

Published 26 days ago • 2 min read

Hey Reader,

Happy Saturday! There have been a lot of changes to the online landscape in recent months, thanks to Google and its (un)Helpful Content Update. That's why I've always been a big fan of diversifying my online presence - not just to supplement traffic and income but to build a true audience that is outside the influence of third parties.

I'm talking about building your own community through an email list and/or membership.

One of the best ways to do that in 2024 is through a writing platform called Medium.

Medium is an absolute gem of a resource for writers, bloggers, or really anyone who wants to build an audience and an income online.

It still baffles me how few people take advantage of it!

Medium is a place where you can publish articles that share your experience, expertise, opinions, and ideas. What makes Medium so powerful is that it has a MASSIVE internal audience (of a million members!), and you can get paid when those members read your work.

We're not necessarily talking about a couple of dollars here or there, either. Some people consistently make hundreds, even thousands of dollars on the platform every month.

I myself went from making $17.40 in my first month to over $1600 by month three.

But believe it or not, the money is not even the best part of writing on Medium. The real benefit is in the way you can leverage Medium to build an audience who knows, likes, and trusts you—an audience whom you can nurture and build a business around.

And Medium is a great place for a huge number of niches; from fitness and personal development to tech and true crime, there's a ton of readers with a wide variety of interests who are literally paying to find and read your stories!

It's been three years since I started on Medium, but it's still one of the most valuable assets in my arsenal as a business owner. (Check out this video for a more recent update on how the platform and my earnings.)

But! (And this is a big but.)

You need to have a solid understanding of the platform and a strategy to make it work for you.

Because honestly? Most people who try to build an online audience fail.

That's why I wanted to tell you about this awesome free masterclass hosted by my former mentor, now friend, Sinem Günel. Sinem is one of Medium's top writers and taught me everything I know about it—I credit her with being a huge part of why I found success so early on after I started.

This free session will teach you:

  • Why most people fail to build an online audience
  • What the top 1% of medium writers do differently in 2024
  • The step-by-step process to grow your audience

You also get free access to the Medium Boost Blackbook, a valuable resource that will unveil what a Boost really is and what it does, what type of stories get Boosted, and how to increase your chances of getting your stories Boosted (and, therefore, earn considerably more from that story!)

The Masterclass is happening at 1 pm EST next Thursday, April 18th.

You can sign up here:

Not free at that time? Don't fret - as long as you register, you will get a link to the replay that you can watch afterward. 😊

Have a great weekend!

Cheers,
Corrie

Hey Reader, One of the most crucial things you can do as a content creator - whether you're a blogger, YouTuber, TikToker, or Medium Writer - is to grow and nurture an email list. Why? Because your email list is pretty much the only marketing asset you truly own. Google traffic can dry up overnight. Pinterest traffic can drop off a cliff without explanation. Heck, even Medium could decide to shut down its platform or arbitrarily decide to ban Call-to-Actions in their articles. And you...

Hi Reader! It's been a hot minute since I dropped by your inbox. With the arrival of the new year, there have been a lot of unforeseen changes, adventures, challenges, and projects! One such adventure was a recent vacation to the Caribbean (and long overdue - my first time traveling abroad since pre-COVID.) Since my return, I have been hard at work behind the scenes, having recently created a brand new niche blog that I'm very excited about! I noticed that, while I still love ChatGPT for a...

Hello Reader, A few weeks ago, ChatGPT launched custom GPTs - a beta feature for Plus users that's caused nearly as big a stir as the launch of ChatGPT itself just over a year ago. Why? Because it puts the power of AI technology in your hands - without needing to know how to code. Now, anyone can harness this technology to make a custom bot fine-tuned to a specific purpose. And that is a big deal for two reasons: You can now create your own bot that's better customized to your needs than the...
